BS Data Science at NUST SEECS

BS Data Science is offered exclusively at SEECS Islamabad campus. It was one of the first dedicated data science undergraduate programs in Pakistan. The program is distinct from BS Computer Science — it has a stronger emphasis on statistics, data analysis, and domain-specific applications.

Curriculum

The curriculum covers probability, statistics, and statistical modelling, machine learning (classification, regression, clustering, ensemble methods), big data technologies (Hadoop, Apache Spark, NoSQL databases), data visualisation and dashboarding (Tableau, Power BI, D3.js), data mining, data warehousing, and ETL processes, and data engineering (data pipelines, data lakes, streaming). Students use Python (Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn), R, and SQL throughout.

Career Paths in Pakistan

Data scientists are hired by Careem, Daraz, Foodpanda, Jazz, Telenor, banks (HBL, NBP, UBL), and fintech companies. Roles include data analyst, data scientist, data engineer, business intelligence analyst, and machine learning engineer. Data science skills are also among the most valued in the remote work market.

Further Study

SEECS offers MS Data Science for graduates who want to specialise further. Many data science graduates also pursue MS abroad or transition into AI/ML research.
