What Is Information Security at MCS?

BE Information Security at NUST MCS is a specialised 4-year engineering program focused on protecting computer systems, networks, and data from cyber threats. The program was originally called Information Security Engineering and is only offered at MCS among all NUST colleges, making it a unique degree within the university system. The curriculum combines computer science, networking, and security.

Curriculum

The program covers cryptography and cryptanalysis (symmetric and asymmetric encryption, hash functions, digital signatures), network security (firewalls, IDS/IPS, VPNs, secure protocols), ethical hacking and penetration testing (vulnerability assessment, exploitation, reporting), digital forensics and incident response, malware analysis and reverse engineering, secure software development lifecycle (SDLC), and security governance, risk management, and compliance. Students complete hands-on labs using industry tools.

MCS Information Security Labs

MCS has dedicated information security labs equipped with network simulation tools, security testing frameworks (Kali Linux, Metasploit, Wireshark), digital forensics tools, and sandbox environments for malware analysis. Students get hands-on experience with real security tools used in the industry.

Career Scope

Cyber security is one of the fastest-growing fields globally and in Pakistan. Graduates work in banking and finance (security analyst, SOC analyst), telecom companies (network security engineer), government agencies (CERT Pakistan, NTISB, FIA cyber crime), fintech and e-commerce companies, and security consulting firms. Global cyber security certifications like CEH, CISSP, and CompTIA Security+ build on the degree.
