Complete comparison of BE Mechanical Engineering at NUST's three campuses — SMME Islamabad (research focus), CEME Rawalpindi (military/workshop focus), and PNEC Karachi (marine focus).

NUST offers BE Mechanical Engineering at three campuses: SMME (H-12 Islamabad, research and theory focus with strong faculty), CEME (Rawalpindi, hands-on workshops, military engineering, swimming pool and extensive sports), and PNEC (Karachi, marine engineering focus near the coast). All three follow the same PEC-accredited Washington Accord curriculum but differ in culture, facilities, and career outcomes. NET merit: approximately 75%+. Starting salary: PKR 60,000-100,000/month.
NUST is unique in offering BE Mechanical Engineering at three different campuses, each with its own character. The core curriculum — thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, mechanics of materials, machine design, heat transfer, manufacturing processes, and CAD/CAM — is the same across all three because all are PEC-accredited under the Washington Accord. But the campus experience and career focus differ significantly.
SMME on the main H-12 campus is the most research-oriented of the three. Students have access to the full main campus experience — 18 hostels, 4 cafeterias, central library, and diverse student activities. SMME has strong research output in thermodynamics, CFD, and materials science. The faculty includes PhDs from international universities. Best for students who want to pursue MS/PhD or work in R&D roles in the automotive and energy sectors.
CEME on Grand Trunk Road in Rawalpindi is the largest military college of NUST with 2,400+ students. It has the best workshop facilities among the three campuses — extensive machine shops, welding, casting, and fabrication labs. The campus has a swimming pool, 3 tennis courts, 2 gyms, squash courts, and football grounds. CEME's mechanical program has a practical, hands-on emphasis. Best for students who want strong practical skills and potential pathways into defence industries.
PNEC near the Karachi coast has a mechanical engineering program oriented toward marine and naval applications. The campus is smaller (75 acres) with a tight-knit community. PNEC also offers Naval Architecture and Maritime Sciences as unique programs. Best for students from Karachi or those interested in marine engineering and naval careers.
Mechanical engineers from NUST are hired by automotive companies (Pak Suzuki, Honda Atlas, Toyota Indus), power sector (WAPDA, K-Electric), oil and gas (OGDCL, PSO), manufacturing (Engro, Lucky Cement), and defense industries. Many also pursue MS abroad in mechanical engineering fields.
Tuition at all three campuses is PKR 197,050/semester. Hostel and mess charges vary by campus.
