Freshman's Guide to Private Hostels in H-13

Hey, freshies! As you get ready to start your university journey, finding the right place to live is a big deal. If you're looking for a private hostel in the H-13 area, you'll want to be smart about it. This guide isn't written by me; I found these valuable tips on a Facebook group a while back and wanted to share them with you. While I can't remember the original author to give them credit, their insights are super helpful for navigating the process and avoiding common mistakes.

Hostel Hunting: What You Need to Know

Finding a good hostel can be tricky, but knowing what to look for will make a huge difference. Remember, you're the one paying, so don't be afraid to stand your ground and ask for what you need.

  • Visit Before You Commit: Don't trust what hostel owners tell you on the phone. Always visit the place in person to see the rooms and facilities before you agree to anything.
  • Never Pay Full Security: Many hostels will ask for a security deposit, but it's often a scam. Tell them you can't pay it. If they insist, just pay a small amount, like 2000 rupees, and nothing more.
  • Sign Short-Term Agreements: Never sign a long-term contract for six months or more. Tell them you'll only stay for one month. This gives you the freedom to try the hostel out and move if you're not happy. There are plenty of other options available in H-13.
  • Be Ready for the 'Honeymoon' Period: For the first month or two, things might seem great. But many hostels will show their true colors later on. They're all businesses looking to make a profit.
  • Hot Water is a Hot Topic: In the winter, many hostels have issues with hot water. They might only turn on the geyser for a few hours a day. Make sure you ask about this. Adil Hostel, for example, is known for being good with hot water.
  • Look for Cooperative Management: Choose a hostel where the management is helpful and actually listens to your concerns. You'll be dealing with them a lot, so this is important.
  • Renting a Flat: You can also consider renting a flat, but it's a good idea to stay in a hostel first. This gives you time to make friends, get to know the area, and find a flat with people you trust.

Packing Smart: Essentials for Hostel Life

When you're packing, don't forget these key items that can make your hostel experience much more comfortable.

  • Pillows: Bring your own! Most hostels provide pillows that are as hard as rocks.
  • Water Bottle and Toiletries: These are must-haves. Also, bring a blanket or cover since winters are coming.
  • Water Supply: If you find that the hostel's water isn't great, consider a water delivery service like Oxygen. They deliver purified water for a small fee, and it's much better.

Remember, this is your home for the next few months, so it's okay to have high expectations. Be confident and don't let anyone take advantage of you. If you're not sure, it's always a good idea to have your parents help with the deal. For our grad students, be extra confident—you've been around the block and you know what you deserve.
